Firefighters battle another wildfire near H-2

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu firefighters this afetrnoon returned to the Waiawa area to battle another wildfire near the H-2 Freeway.

The fire broke out shortly before 6 this evening. Police to shut some lanes of the freeway where fire trucks were parked and firefighters were working.
The fire is in the same general area of a wildfire that broke out just after noon today and came within about 50 yards of the Wahiawa-bound lanes of the H-2 and was contained as of 2:30 p.m.
That fire was reported in the lower area of fallow sugar cane lands northeast of H-2, about half way between the H-1/H-2 merge and the Ka Uka Boulevard off-ramp. The fire approached H-2 and came as close as 50 yards from the freeway. HFD firefighters attacked the fire on the ground using hose lines from an apparatus on north-bound lanes of H-2 and from dirt roads in the old sugar cane fields.
Five engine companies, three Fire Department tankers and the department's helicopter were sent to the scene, beginning about 12:05 p.m.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the Honolulu Police Department blocked a portion of two north-bound lanes of the H-2 while HFD apparatus and firefighters were on the freeway. HFD apparatus left the H-2 by 1:45 p.m.
The fire was estimated at about 5 acres and the cause is still unknown and under investigation.
A fire occurred last week in the same general area, forced the closure briefly of all north- and south-bound lanes of the H-2 Freeway Saturday afternoon and smoldered through the weekend.
No homes or other structures have been damaged to date by the fires.
