Jaguars sign ex-Warrior offensive lineman Forney

Associated Press

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed guard Kynan Forney and safety Brian Russell to fill out their 53-man roster.

Forney, a 6-foot-3, 302-pound veteran from the University of Hawai'i, has started 88 games at right guard. He spent seven seasons with Atlanta — he was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005 — before joining San Diego in 2008. The Chargers released him last week.

Russell, a 6-2, 210-pound veteran, has started 94 games for Minnesota, Cleveland and Seattle. He started all 16 games the past two seasons for Seattle. The Seahawks released him in final cuts. He has 484 career tackles and 16 interceptions.

RAIDERS

UH ALUM SATELE WILL BE SECOND STRING

Chris Morris liked his chances of becoming Oakland's starting center this season, even as he practiced with the team's backups nearly all of training camp.

The fourth-year offensive lineman's beliefs were validated this week when the Raiders cut John Wade and promoted Morris ahead of Kailua High and University of Hawai'i alum Samson Satele to start Monday night's season-opener against San Diego.

"That was definitely the goal," Morris said. "It was different having a couple of guys that they foresaw being ahead of you at that point. I was putting together some pretty good games and trying to work on my technique a lot during practice. I think just doing good helped me out."

Oakland traded a sixth-round pick and exchanged fourth-round picks with Miami to get Satele from the Dolphins, anticipating the third-year center would compete with Wade for the starting job.

Satele was Miami's starter since the beginning of his rookie season in 2007, but underwent shoulder surgery this past offseason and struggled making the line calls in Oakland during training camp.

Law and Order: A former Nevada casino worker who has accused Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her would drop her civil lawsuit if he acknowledged the rape and apologized, her attorney said.

Reno-based attorney Cal Dunlap wrote in a letter to Roethlisberger's lawyers that his client would also like the quarterback to donate $100,000 to the Committee to Aid Abused Women, a Reno nonprofit organization that offers support to domestic violence victims.

Roethlisberger's lawyer, David Cornwell, said yesterday they wouldn't accept her offer.

Vikings: Minnesota defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams will be able to play in the season-opener at Cleveland this weekend, regardless of what happens with their court case against the NFL.

The Williamses, who are not related, are challenging four-game suspensions handed down by the league for violating the league's drug policy last summer.

The case is still tied up in court, but NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said yesterday the suspensions will not begin this weekend in any event.

Steelers: Pittsburgh center Justin Hartwig signed a four-year contract yesterday, two days before the season-opener against Tennessee.

Hartwig enters his second season as the Steelers' center and eighth in the NFL.
