PBS Hawaii to air local programs on Father Damien

By Mike Gordon
Advertiser Staff Writer

PBS Hawaii will air four hours of original, locally produced programs about the life and legacy of Father Damien, including interviews with four of the remaining patients at Kalaupapa and a special rebroadcast of “Damien,” the powerful and critically acclaimed monologue starring Terrence Knapp.
The programing, which will run from Oct. 11 to 15, will begin with the Peabody Award-winning “Damien” at 7 p.m. The monologue was produced by the station in 1977 and aired nationally the following year.
“Damien” is a monologue, delivered by Father Damien as a spirit watching his own funeral procession some 50 years after his death. The program will encore at 9 p.m. Oct. 15.
Station president Leslie Wilcox also will present four interviews with Kalauapa patients — one each night at 7:30 p.m. from Oct. 12 to 15. The patients still think of Damien as a continuing presence in their prayers, conversations and lives.
And finally at 8 p.m. Oct. 15, “Insights on PBS Hawaii” will explore the future of Kalaupapa.
