Gymnastics: Kanaeva wins fifth gold at rhythmic worlds

Associated Press

MIE, Japan — Olympic champion Evgeniya Kanaeva of Russia won a fifth gold medal at the rhythmic gymnastics world championships on Friday, edging Daria Kondakova in the individual all-around event.

Kanaeva finished first in three of the four disciplines for a total of 113.850 points. Kondakova was second with 113.250 points. Anna Bessonova of Ukraine, the 2007 all-around world champion, took the bronze.

Kanaeva won the individual ball and ribbon events Thursday, adding to the hoop and rope gold medals she received Tuesday.

Kanaeva won the individual all-around gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She dominated the World Games in Taiwan in July and also won four gold medals at a World Cup meet in Minsk last month.
