Mules rally in second half

KAPOLEI — Andrew Manley completed 24 of 35 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns last night, including the go-ahead 50-yard touchdown throw to Kamana Akagi with 7:47 remaining, to help Leilehua rally past Kapolei, 14-10, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action.

The defending Division I state runner-up Mules improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the OIA's Red Conference Western Division. The Hurricanes fell to 2-3, 1-2.

Manley's TD pass to Akagi came on fourth-and-2, just two minutes after Kapolei had taken a 10-7 lead on a 21-yard halfback option pass from Elijah Tagura to Donnie King, and Eric Morales' extra point.

Manley rolled out to his right and launched a sideline pass to Akagi, who outraced the Hurricane defenders to the end zone.

"It's a designed rollout, and the receiver has the option to run a streak or a hitch route," Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said. "Andrew threw it to his back shoulder — you can try to teach that, but to do it when the chips are down, that's Drew."

The Mules defense forced Kapolei to punt on the Hurricanes' next two possessions, but Leilehua faced a punt situation itself from midfield with 1:19 left. But Kapolei fumbled the return and the Mules recovered on the Hurricanes' 26, and they were able to run out the clock from there.

"We were holding them down really well, but our offense is so inconsistent right now and we weren't able to put it together," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "We have three losses, and we've led at halftime in all three of those games. We're just not where we need to be right now."

The Hurricanes took a 3-0 halftime lead after Morales' 37-yard field goal with 7:51 remaining. Leilehua went up, 7-3, after Manley's 19-yard touchdown pass to Blaine Furtado with 4:49 left in the third quarter.
