Capitol hearings to focus on DBEDT layoffs

Advertiser Staff

Two legislative committees at the state Capitol tomorrow will focus on almost four dozen potential layoffs within the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

The House Committee on Economic Revitalization, Business and Military Affairs and the Senate Committee on Economic Development and Technology are to examine planned layoffs of employees who work in the film, enterprise zone and other offices.
The effect of the layoffs on the business community and the general public also will be discussed, as well as the projected loss in state revenue from the cuts.
Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered the jobs of nearly 1,200 state workers be eliminated in lieu of new contracts with state employee unions.
