PUNK FABULOUS

A movie about three proto-grrrls in a punk band? We're there! This '80s artifact features a young Diane Lane, rad hair and makeup, and a punked-up soundtrack. Sounds like a recipe for nirvana, and "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains" delivers, though it's long been under the radar. Yeah, maybe the rockstar teen character Corinne Burns (Lane) doesn't have much vocal talent — but attitude, persistence and glam go a long way. The film didn't go big during its original run, but it's now a cult favorite. Catch an exclusive showing of this film as part of Interisland Terminal's Turn it Up to 11! Rock 'N' Roll Cinema Weekend, today at 4 p.m., Kahala 8 theaters; $9.75; www.interislandterminal.com.

CAGE COUTURE ALL THE RAGE

The first rule of Fight Club: don't talk about Fight Club. Lucky for us, the guys at Razor Sports can talk about the underground fighter fashions that are big with mixed martial arts and Ultimate Fighting Championship fans.

"These brands are super hip, hidden brands that aren't found in the mainstream," says Kaulana Chang of Razor Sports. "Because they're so unknown, they're cool — and very sought after."

Jacob Kahai, left, likes the streamlined "street" look from Hostility shirts ($32) with Tapout's Camo beanie ($19.95); Brad Bonilla taps into the Silver Star line of T-shirts ($29.95) and Flexfit hat ($29.95) for looking good outside of the cage. More underground brands are available at the store.

Razor Sports, on the first floor of Pearlridge Uptown, is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; www.razor-concepts.com, 465-5007.

MANGA CROSS-STITCH

Mad for manga? Itching to cross-stitch? Here's a way to combine the two. "Manga Cross-Stitch: Make Your Own Graphic Art Needlework" (Andrews McNeel Publishing, $20) fuses the bright colors and dynamic lines of manga with the skills of traditional needlecraft to produce stylish, action-packed creations. The 128-page book and CD provide more than 100 manga designs along with charts to print out and stitch. There are tips and techniques for cross-stitch beginners, experts and everyone in between.

London-based author Helen McCarthy travels the world lecturing on anime and manga. She learned to cross-stitch at age 4. This book merges her passion and her craft.

MANIFEST YOUR RHYME

Ges Miyashiro is coming back strong with the new version of the popular hip-hop blog known as www.knowone.com. After the original blog got hacked, Miyashiro rebuilt to create www.manifesttherhyme.com, showcasing the newest work of hip-hop artists both local and international.

"It's built a team of like-minded bloggers that include DJ Jimmy Taco, DJ 45 Revolver, Phalary42, and Los Angeles-based rapper Shawn Chrystopher," explains Miyashiro.

Miyashiro is manifesting music, too. "I have a project I'm working on that unites a rapper from Brooklyn, New York, with an up-and-coming producer from Hayward, California," he said. "They haven't ever met, but it really showcases the power of the Internet." The album will be produced by and marketed on the Manifest blog.

Check out music with "no boundaries" at www.manifesttherhyme.com.

SALES & BARGAINS

  • Whoa, you're still recovering from last weekend — the barbecues, the sun and, oh my, the shopping. Give your feet and your wallet a break this week. It's time to focus on fall, and hunker down to sort through what you've already got. Weed through your closet, and toss or pass on anything that has cobwebs attached. What good is a closet full of clothes if you can’t see what’s inside? Speed up dressing time by organizing hanging clothes by type or by occasion, toss shoes that have seen better days, or take them to get re-soled (Tam’s Shoe Repair in Kaimukï is a great option). Empty drawers, shake out wool, refold, and toss raggedy items. Freshen up your drawers with sachets of lavender. Still need help? Have a girlfriend come over, open a bottle of wine, and treat her to the duds you decide need to be gone forever. Simplify, and it’ll save you time off your morning prep. Tam’s Shoe Repair, 1145 12th Ave., Suite A; 737-1715.
    • Pack a punch into your work wear: pull “on” an oh-so-fall trend without adding heat. Tights and leggings (even in animal prints) are so IN this fall. Try nude fishnet anklets, neon highlighter anklets, pointelle tights or full python print leggings on for size. Textured see-thru tights pack a big punch with little weight. We like the affordable selection at J.Crew-on-the-Island (though no python leggings were found here). Neon is best reserved for accent pieces, and the three-pack in highlighter pink, yellow and green looks great when paired with a neutral palate. Prices range from $9.50 to $24.50. J.Crew-on-the-Island, Ala Moana Center; 949-5252.
    • Since we’re still on our neon kick, why not add neon to our nails? Of all places, we were surprised and delighted to find an
“Island Girl” brand nail polish at an ABC store in Waikïkï. We chose a hot-pink shade for just $1.99! Yeah sure, there are other cheap brands at your local drug store, but this one is called Island Girl! Something about it we just love, and oh what a bargain.
