Badgers still being bugged by flu

Associated Press

Wisconsin's not quite over the flu.

Badgers coach Bret Bielema said yesterday at his weekly news conference that after more than 40 players were sick over the course of last week, two more players showed flulike symptoms Sunday.

"The flu, I think, is through us. But on the same account, we had two new guys pop up," he said. "We're just kind of going off what the medical staff and trainers have told us (how) to handle it when it comes up."

That includes sending the players home to get as much rest as they can.

Wisconsin is 2-0 and preparing to play Football Championship Subdivision opponent Wofford Saturday after hanging on to beat Fresno State, 34-31, in double overtime despite the illness that had several players needing IV fluids before the game.

Bielema said the training staff told him that the flu could linger all season.

"You're never going to be totally through this. Guys that haven't had it, even guys that have had it could get another strain at some point and you've just got to give them plenty of rest at that time," he said. "Hopefully, the worst is behind us."

UCLA

BRUINS STARTING QB WILL BE PICKED TODAY

After getting a major road win at Tennessee and losing quarterback Kevin Prince to injury in one wild weekend, UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel wanted to catch his breath before deciding on a replacement.

Neuheisel is expected to announce today whether veteran Kevin Craft or freshman Richard Brehaut will fill in for Prince this weekend against Kansas State.

Prince led the unbeaten Bruins to a 19-15 win at Tennessee last Saturday, but the freshman's jaw was broken on a late sack. He will be out for at least three weeks.

Neuheisel and offensive coordinator Norm Chow planned to decide on a replacement late last night.

ELSEWHERE

San Jose State: San Jose State coach Dick Tomey named junior Jordan LaSecla as his starting quarterback for Saturday's game at Stanford.

LaSecla took over for starter Kyle Reed at the end of the first quarter in the Spartans' 24-14 loss to Utah on Saturday. He completed 21 of 33 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown.

Tennessee: Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says he will stick with redshirt senior Jonathan Crompton as his starting quarterback when the Volunteers travel to Florida on Saturday.

Crompton threw three interceptions in a 19-15 loss to UCLA on Saturday and was involved in a fumbled snap that was recovered by the Bruins. He completed 13 of 26 passes for 93 yards.

Vanderbilt: Vanderbilt has lost two starters for the rest of the season to injuries with the worst being senior free safety Ryan Hamilton, who tore a pectoral muscle.

Hamilton is a co-captain who started his 34th straight game in last weekend's 23-9 loss at No. 9 LSU. The Commodores also lost starting right tackle James Williams to a dislocated left ankle.

Oklahoma State: Starting tailback Kendall Hunter is doubtful for No. 16 Oklahoma State's game Saturday against Rice with an injured right leg.

Hunter left Oklahoma State's 45-35 loss to Houston in the second quarter. He had rushed for 104 yards on 32 carries in two games this season.

USC: Southern California coach Pete Carroll says quarterback Matt Barkley and safety Taylor Mays both will practice this week despite minor injuries.

Barkley has a bruised right shoulder, and Mays has a mild right knee sprain.
