Powers surfs into fourth round

Kaua'i's Roy Powers won two heats yesterday to advance to the fourth round of the Hurley Pro Trestles men's surfing contest.

The second round and half of the third round were completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Lower Trestles, Calif.

Powers defeated California's Tim Reyes in the second round, then upset fellow Hawai'i surfer Fred Patacchia Jr. in the third round.

Powers received a score of 7.23 on his final wave of the heat to defeat Patacchia, 13.06-12.0.

The only other Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest is Mililani's Kekoa Bacalso. He is scheduled to face Australian Chris Davidson in the third round.

Three Hawai'i surfers have been eliminated: Patacchia, Kai Barger and Dustin Barca.

HILO BEATS CU, 3-0

Hawai'i-Hilo outshot host Chaminade 28-5 and scored three second-half goals in a 3-0 victory yesterday at Saint Louis School field.

Gina Tumasone, Alysia Salvador and Chelsea Gomez scored for the Vulcans (1-4-1).

Marissa Minor made eight saves for the Silverswords (0-3).
