A repair crew works on one of at least three utility poles on Kailua Road damaged in an early-morning vehicle accident. Traffic in both directions at the scene, which was near the entrance to Kailua, was blocked so repairs could be made.

Police reopened Kailua Road this morning after an overnight closure caused by caused by an accident involving a van and a utility pole.

A portion of Kailua Road heading into Kailua was closed all day yesterday, starting at 6 a.m.
A Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman said yesterday that repairs were expected to continue until early this morning.
Kailua Road was closed between Ulumanu and Hamakua drives.
Police originally believed two Hawaiian Electric Co. poles had been brought down and that a transformer had blown.
But HECO spokesman Darren Pai said the van hit a Hawaiian Telcom pole, which leaned over and became entangled in the guy-wires of a HECO pole. Pai said there was no blown transformer.
Pai said HECO expected to complete repairs to its pole and equipment by 9 p.m.
Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida said that company was expecting to work into the night to replace the pole and repair its equipment.
Nishida said repairs were taking a long time because the pole is being replaced on a rocky hillside at a site where workers cannot use a machine, so the hole had to be dug manually.
