Honolulu mayor’s silence on issues earns GOP criticism

HONOLULU — The head of the state Republican Party is criticizing Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann for not revealing his positions on gay marriage, same-gender civil unions and abortion.

Hannemann is refusing to divulge his views, saying he is not an official candidate for governor. However, the Democrat’s war chest contained nearly $1.2 million as of June 30 for an expected gubernatorial campaign next year.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and Republicans John Carroll and Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona outlined their views on all three issues.
State GOP chief Jonah Kaauwai said in a statement Tuesday that Hannemann “flat out played politics and dodged the question.”
Kaauwai said voters shouldn’t trust candidates who hide their opinions on controversial issues.
