Pedestrian killed by speeder on Ka'ahumanu Highway

Advertiser Staff

A pedestrian on Maui died in a car accident last night on Ka'ahumanu Highway near Lono Avenue. Michael Owen, 52, was crossing Ka'ahumanu outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a Dodge four-door sedan driven by a 45-year-old Makawao man. Owen died at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said speeding was determined to be a factor in the crash. Whether drugs or alcohol were involved still had not been determined as the investigation continues.

It was Maui's 14th traffic fatality for the year, the same number as at this time in 2008, and the third fatality this month.
