A 63-year-old University of Hawaii math professor was charged this afternoon with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl over a six-year period.

David A. Stegenga of Enchanted Lake in Kailua was charged with seven counts of first-degree sexual assault and five counts of third-degree sexual assault. His bail was set at $500,000.
Stegenga is accused of sexually assaulting the girl from 1999 to 2005. Police did not say what the relationship was between Stegenga and the girl.
Stegenga has taught mathematics at university since 1980. He was arrested yesterday morning at the UH campus and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Monday.
