7 arrested in Waipahu attack

A man who asked for a cigarette was beaten with beer bottles and baseball bats and was run over three times late Friday night in a Waipahu neighborhood.

The 25-year-old was taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center after the 11:20 p.m. incident, and seven people — three men, three women and a 15-year-old girl — were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The fight occurred at Pupunohe and Pupupuhi streets in Waipahu.

According to police, after the man approached a group of people and asked for a cigarette, a man in the group punched him and seven to eight adult women jumped him, punching and kicking.

Beer bottles were broken on the man's face and when the man tried to get away, a Jeep struck him three times. Then two men got out of the Jeep with baseball bats and struck him. A third man got out of the Jeep and punched and kicked the man.

Arrested on charges of attempted murder were Paulo Ioane, 20, of Kawaihuna Street, Jeremiah Leota, 26, of Pupupuhi Street, Jimmy Robinson, 19, of Pupu'ole Street, Ana Lealiiee, 45, of Pupu'ole Street, Eliza Lealiiee, 19, of Pupu'ole Street, and Jamel Leota, 25, of Pupupuhi Street. The name of the arrested 15-year-old was not released.

The area is commonly referred to as "the pupus" because of the street names — Pupupuhi, Pupu'ole, Pupunohe, Pupukahi, Pupumomi, Pupukui, Pupukupa, and so forth. The area is bounded by low-income housing clustered mauka and makai of Farrington Highway near the Waipahu Shopping Center and has been called troublesome by police.
