Big Island police seek public's help in probe of fatal moped accident

HILO — Hawaii County police are asking for the public’s help in their investigation of a moped accident on Friday that resulted in the death of a 29-year-old Hilo man.

Police have determined that Jason Garcia was traveling south on Kawili Street shortly before 6:30 p.m. when he lost control of the moped, ran off the roadway and struck a concrete driveway ramp.
Garcia was thrown from the moped. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. They have ordered an autopsy.
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident call Officer Fetuutuunai Amuimuia at 961-2211. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
