LIHUE — A 61-year-old Lihue man died last night in a single-vehicle crash on Kaumualii Highway.

According to a preliminary police report, Tomas Barrientos was headed east in a Ford pickup about 10:25 p.m. when his truck hit a guardrail. The truck went airborne, flipped over and ended up in a drainage ditch.
The accident took place just west of the Kauai Humane Society.
Barrientos was the only person in the truck.
The east-bound lane of Kaumualii was closed and traffic was alternated through the west-bound lane. The highway was completely open at around 1:20 am.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Barrientos is the seventh traffic fatality on Kauai so far this year.
