Hawaii teacher furlough days won't affect after-school athletic events

Advertiser Staff

The Department of Education said teacher furloughs will not affect after-school athletic events, but some dances, conferences, plays and other extracurricular activities scheduled for furlough days will be rescheduled or canceled.

Athletic teams will be allowed to conduct practices after 3 p.m. on designated furlough days and teachers will be able to coach on those days.
However, officials are reviewing whether preseason and statewide tournaments may be affected.
Dances, proms, plays and other student activities planned by schools after 3 p.m. on furlough days will be rescheduled to Thursdays or another day, if possible, the DOE said. If the activity can't be rescheduled, it will be canceled.
Furloughed DOE employees who volunteer to participate in activities will do so during nonwork hours.
