High-surf advisory for north, west shores goes into effect tonight

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service says a high-surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of all islands except the Big Island and Lanai will go into effect at 6 this evening.

The weather service says wave heights from a swell driven by the remnants of typhoon Choi-wan will reach advisory levels tonight.
The advisory will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday.
Surf will rise to heights of 12 to 15 feet on north-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai,Niihau, Maui and Molokai, the weather service said.
West-facing shores can expect surf of 8 to 12 feet, the weather service said.
Forecasters believe the swell could be the first in what might be a busy season of high surf.
City lifeguards yesterday began urging beachgoers to practice caution.
They suggest beachgoers:
— Always swim at a beach with a lifeguard.
— Consult with a lifeguard before entering the water.
— Heed all warning signs.
— Never swim alone.
— Alert a lifeguard or dial 911 if they see someone in distress.
