Police officer leads woman to safety during house fire

Advertiser Staff

A police officer helped an elderly woman get out of a burning house near Castle Medical Center yesterday, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

No one was hurt in the 2 p.m. fire.

The fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to the house at 675 'Ulumalu St. and $25,000 in damage to a house next door, Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said in a news release.

The Honolulu Police Department officer was across the street at a convenience store when he saw smoke, ran to the house and saw the woman inside, Seelig said. The officer yelled to the woman, entered the house and led her to safety.

The woman was described as the visiting mother of the person who lives in the home.

Seven fire companies with about 35 firefighters battled the fire, which was extinguished at 2:46 p.m.
