Mayor bounces to jukebox beat

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann

This past weekend, Mayor Hannemann was out and about, doing his Saturday radio broadcast, eating a malassada at the Portuguese Heritage Festa, dropping by the Waikiki Ho'olaule'a and tweeting about it the whole time. On Sunday, he was even on "Lets Go Fishing." How ubiquitous is that?!

The radio show is called the mayor's "Jukebox Jamboree," a name that calls to mind the old banjo-picking bear band at Disneyland. Hannemann's Jamboree is both cooler than the mechanical bears and delightfully dorkier.

"This song was No. 1 in 1975. From the dynamic duo, Captain and Tennille. Oh yeah, love is gonna keep us together, on 107.9, Hawai'i's Cool Gold," all spoken with a perfect FM radio voice. Oh yeah.

The show is mostly dedications and mentions of every local event from Warrior football to the Chaminade president's inauguration to Taste of Kalihi, each with a peg to a 1970s-era song.

Before playing "Forever Young" in honor of Sacred Hearts' centennial anniversary, Hannemann said, "And this is how every Sacred Hearts graduate will always be ... "

When it was time to announce the "city and county employee of the week," Hannemann played the Beach Boys' "All Summer Long," because the employee had been "keeping the beach park clean all summer long."

Hannemann does that smart move of giving specific examples, touchstones that make people think, "Wow! I did that too!"

"Liz Damon and the Orient Express were playing at C'est Si Bon at the Pagoda Hotel when I first saw them in high school ... Here's Liz Damon on the national charts in 1971, '1900 Yesterday.' "

Hannemann has the ability to indulge in things he clearly loves — like playing music from his "freshman year on the banks of the Charles River" (oh those Ivy Leaguers can't get through a conversation without telling you where they went to school, yeah?), or singing "Drop Baby Drop" with the three Neighbor Island mayors at an ILWU dinner (and tweeting about it) — and still be taken seriously.

Hannemann's nemeses Neil Abercrombie and Linda Lingle can't pull that sort of thing off without looking silly or desperate.

However, the difference between happy Mufi and unhappy Mufi is so extreme. Happy Mufi has a song in his heart. Unhappy Mufi is quick to take offense and never wrong.

Hannemann's profile photo on his Twitter page shows him smiling with his basketball buddy Barack Obama. The two wear almost matching ice blue ties. If only Hannemann could emulate Obama's ice cool temperament.

Just this week, Obama was on David Letterman's show saying it's part of a politician's job to have folks yell at 'em. That's not part of the "Jukebox Jamboree." That's never part of Hannemann's show.

But Sergio Mendez is. Oh yeah.
