Four gymnasts from the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym qualified for the USA Gymnastics National Talent Opportunity Program today through Sunday at the Women's National Gymnastics Team Training Center at the Bela Karolyi Gymnastics Camp in Huntsville, Texas.

The national competition is designed to find the nation's top young gymnasts.

The gymnasts are Honolulu's Madison Benzor (Red Hill Elementary, fourth grade), Kane'ohe's Nicole Lauro (Le Jardin Academy, fourth), Honolulu's Callie Shinoda (home-schooled, fourth) and Hawai'i Kai's Sarah Barron (Holy Nativity, fourth), who earned a spot on the National TOPs team and participated in the training camp last year.

The first three will compete in the 9-year-old division while Barron will compete in the 10s.

The girls qualified after being evaluated at a regional competition, which featured more than 3,000 participants.

From that group, 300 qualified to compete in the National TOP testing.

The 20 gymnasts who receive the highest scores in their age divisions will be invited to attend a training camp in December at Karolyi's Gymnastics camp, home of famed coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi.

Receiving special recognition at the regional testing was 8-year-old Jenna Domingo, who earned the highest level possible for 8-year-olds. Eight-year-olds can compete only at the regional level and are not eligible to travel to the national competition.

The National Qualifiers are coached by Hawaiian Island Twisters coaches Lori Yee and head coach Joe Rapp.

KEIKI FISHING TOURNEY A CATCH

More than 600 people, including 309 keiki, competed in the first Keiki Fishing Tournament last week at Ka'anapali Golf Resort.

The event, sponsored by Maui Electric, benefited the United Way Maui. Participants fished for two hours along the 18th hole of the Royal Ka'anapali Course, catching and releasing fish.

The first tilapia was caught by Brayden Reys-Sojot in the 6-11 Division.
