CFB: Utah St. wins against Southern Utah 53-34

Associated Press

LOGAN, Utah — Running back Robert Turbin ran for 106 yards, caught four passes for 116 yards and scored three touchdowns Saturday to lead Utah State to a 53-34 win over Southern Utah.

Turbin has rushed for 100-plus yards in all three USU (1-2) games this season.

Turbin's longest play of the day was a 77-yard catch of a screen pass for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Michael Smith rushed eight times, including for 100 yards and two touchdowns, for the Aggies. He also caught one TD pass. Quarterback Diondre Borel was 15-of-21 for 316 yards.

Cade Cooper was 24-of-48, passing for 250 yards and three touchdowns, to lead Southern Utah. Fesi Sitake caught nine passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns for the Thunderbirds (1-3).

USU started quickly, gaining a 14-3 first-quarter edge, as quarterback Borel was 4-of-4 with a touchdown pass to Smith. Wide receiver Stanley Morrison also tossed a touchdown pass early — to Turbin — on a receiver-option play to surprise SUU.

Cooper, though, scored on three of four possessions in the second quarter to keep SUU close at halftime 31-24. Cooper was 20-of-30 in the first half.

USU made three special teams turnovers in the game — two fumbles on returns and a punt that hit a player — which led to 13 points by SUU.

The visiting Thunderbirds had two turnovers in the game, both interceptions in the fourth quarter, thrown by Cooper and reserve QB Ammon Olsen.
