Faiths to celebrate Ghandi's birthday
Spiritual leaders from various faiths, from Unity Church of Hawai'i to a monk from a Hindu temple on Kaua'i, and the playing of the national anthems of the United States, Hawai'i and India will be part of an International Day of Nonviolence Birthday Celebration for Mahatma Gandhi.
The observance of interfaith discussion, music, dance, Indian folk dance, poems — even "laughter yoga" — is scheduled 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday near the statue of the great pacifist leader outside Honolulu Zoo.
It is scheduled by the Gandhi International Institute for Peace.

DEATH, GRIEVING SUBJECTS OF LECTURE
The Rev. Joe Kempf will speak on death and the grieving process at the annual Mackey Lecture at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus of Chaminade University/Saint Louis School.
Kempf is author of the book, "No One Cries the Wrong Way."
The lecture, "Seeing God Through Tears: No One Cries the Wrong Way," will address a number of questions about grief, including "Where is God to be found in the midst of ... loss and suffering?" and "What good does it make to pray when facing the death of a loved one?" "What do you say to a grieving friend?" "Or a child?"
The lecture is free. No registration is needed.

ST. ANDREW'S OFFERS TAIZE MEDITATION
Taize, a relaxing and meditative form of prayer originally developed by a monastic community in France, is offered as a new weekly service at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Andrew.
The service consists of chant, music and prayer.
It will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the cathedral.
The service is free and open to the public.

ANIMAL BLESSINGS HONOR ST. FRANCIS
Several blessings of the animals have been scheduled to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis.
St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order, and patron saint of animals and the environment, was known for his love and appreciation for all creation, particularly the animal world.
For both events, animals are asked to be on leash, or in a pet carrier.
The 4:30 p.m. service will also include special prayers for the animals and their caregivers, and a performance by the All Angels Children's Choir.
A reception following the service, from 5 to 6 p.m., will include food, music and petting zoo. Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
The blessing is free and open to the public.
