A 24-year-old man was in critical condition last night after the Cadillac Escalade he was riding in collided with a utility pole on Kamehameha Highway near Whitmore Avenue.

According to police, the SUV was headed toward Wahiawa around 5:30 a.m. when the driver fell asleep and the vehicle veered off the road.

The passenger was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Wahiawa General Hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police said both men are military personnel.
