Furloughs will test students' self-reliance

For Hawai'i, there is much controversy and mixed feelings about the furlough that public school teachers recently approved. Yes, I agree that this will create a hardship for teachers, parents and students.

But viewing this in a positive light shows that the furlough is the best alternative as teachers sacrifice to prevent layoffs and make the best of the situation.

Students should still be motivated to learn as they sacrifice instructional time. Parents will sacrifice peace of mind as they hope that their children continue to learn and excel.

Overall, this will be a very valuable learning experience because students will have to adjust to independent learning.

I hope that students will become more capable, self-motivated, self-reliant and resilient. These skills will better prepare students for their future, including college and careers. After all, we, the students, are the future.
