Being an NCAA Division III athlete can be described as a labor of love.

Student-athletes undergo daily practices and offseason strength and conditioning programs — much like Division I teams — except they do it all without receiving any athletic scholarship money.

The hard work paid off for a pair of Pacific (Ore.) soccer players from Hawai'i earlier this month.

Kevin Fujimoto, a senior midfielder on the Pacific men's soccer team, and Lauren Kanda, a junior midfielder on the women's team, both scored game-winning goals within three days of each other.

Fujimoto scored the lone goal against Warner Pacific on Sept. 9 less than two minutes into the match.

"I was pretty happy to get that goal, because I missed a couple of chances earlier (this season)," said Fujimoto, a 2006 Kalani graduate.

Kanda got the go-ahead score in the 68th minute of a 3-2 victory over Northwest Christian on Sept. 12.

"It felt good to get my first goal of the season," said Kanda, a 2006 Castle graduate. Her twin sister, Ashley, is a junior forward for the Boxers.
