Kaua'i County fire rescue personnel airlifted a 55-year-old Lāwa'i man from Hanakoa Valley Monday afternoon after he injured his right ankle.

He was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

The injury was reported to police about 4 p.m. by another man, who hiked out to the trailhead to make the call.

Three rescue specialists from the Līhu'e fire station responded in the department's Air-1 helicopter.

The crew landed on a helicopter pad in Hanakoa Valley and retrieved the injured man. He was taken to Princeville Airport, where medics drove him to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.
