Brushfire scorches old sugar cane land in Kekaha

Advertiser Staff

About five acres of former sugar cane land across the old mill in Kekaha were scorched by a brushfire yesterday.

A Kauai County news release says no one was injured and no structures were threatened.

Fifteen firefighters from stations in Waimea, Kalaheo, Koloa, Lihue and Kapaa stations responded to the 10:30 a.m. alarm. The fire department's helicopter also provided water drops.

Firefighters were helped by a public works crew from the Kekaha landfill and workers from Gay & Robinson, who used bulldozers to cut fire breaks. County crews also provided water tankers.

The fire was under control by 1 p.m. and declared extinguished at 3:40.
