Carissa Moore of Honolulu defeated Coco Ho of Sunset Beach in the third round of the TSB Bank Women's Surf Festival contest yesterday at New Zealand.
The second day of the three-day contest was completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Fitzroy Beach, Taranaki, New Zealand.
Moore had one of the best heats of the day, receiving a two wave score of 17.0 to top Ho's total of 9.67.
Moore opened the heat with a score of 9.17 (out of 10) and never relinquished the lead.
"The conditions are very tricky out there and it's difficult to be on the spot when the good ones come through," said Moore, a rookie and Punahou School senior. "I was fortunate to be in position for that first one and it allowed me to string together some maneuvers."
Moore will have to face another Hawai'i surfer in the quarterfinals in Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels.
Bartels defeated Brazil's Bruna Schmitz in yesterday's third round.

LEE'S SLAM LIFTS HILO
Kekoa Lee hit a grand slam with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, powering Hawai'i-Hilo to a 5-4 victory over Dixie State yesterday in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium.
Lee's homer, a shot over the right-field fence, came on a 2-1 pitch from Todd Murlock.
"He was throwing a lot of sliders and I was looking for one," said Lee, who also had a pair of singles. "I got all of a slider middle in."
Shane Kessel also had three hits, including an RBI single, for the Vulcans (15-20).
Brett Adams hit a two-run homer for the Red Storm (26-16).
