National Park Service rangers are investigating the apparent motorcycle death of Robert D. Schommer, 47, a Big Island resident who was found dead by the side of Highway 11 Friday night in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Schommer was wearing a helmet and traveling toward Hilo, park service officials said.

Visitors driving along Highway 11 saw a person lying on the side of the road at mile marker 32 and notified park rangers, who responded around 10:30 p.m.
