Weather service seeking tweets

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service's Honolulu Forecast Office wants your tweets.

The weather service says it has begun an experimental program in which it will look for Twitter posts that contain significant weather information.

Users can tweet any event such as a surf contest or weather in a specific neighborhood but the weather service is most interested in information on significant occurrences like high wind, heavy rain, flooding, thunderstorms, water spouts and funnel clouds, hail, high surf and snow.

The weather service says it expects that access to such information will "help enhance and increase timely and accurate online weather reporting and communication between the public and the NWS Honolulu office."

For information on how to format your tweet, go to: http://www.weather.gov/stormreports/

The weather service says the public will be able to monitor the tweets via third-party websites. Links will be provided at the above site.
