Ricketts perfect, UH has 13-run inning; 'Bows sweep Nevada
Stephanie Ricketts pitched a five-inning perfect game and No. 25 Hawai'i scored 13 runs in the third inning en route to a 20-0 rout over Nevada in the first game of Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader today at Reno, Nev.
The Rainbows won the second game, 11-2, in five innings, to take the series 3-0.
The Rainbow Wahine (39-11 overall, 17-0 WAC) hit five home runs in the first game, including Jenna Rodriguez's three-run blast in the third inning. Nevada is 16-23 and 3-11.
Melissa Gonzalez finished 4 for 5 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
Ricketts (20-6, 11-0) faced the minimum 15 batters, getting six flyouts, seven groundouts and two strikeouts for her first career perfect game. It was her third UH no-hitter.
The Rainbows took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a lead-off homer by Amanda Tauali'i and a two-run homer by Jessica Iwata.
UH sent 17 batters to the plate, including 14 before the first out, in the third inning. Kanani Pu'u-Warren added a two-run homer, and Tracy Yoshikawa had three RBIs with a two-run double and RBI single. The Rainbows got nine of their 18 hits in the third.
The game ended after five innings because of the league's eight-run differential rule.
HAWAI‘I 11, NEVADA 2
The Rainbows scored two runs in the first inning on Kelly Majam's 25th homer of the season and a RBI double by Jenna Rodriguez.
Hawai'i took a 7-0 lead with a five-run second. Traci Yoshikawa had the big hit of the inning, a three-run homer to left. Jessica Iwata added an RBI double and Alexandra Aguirre an RBI single for UH.
In the fifth, the Rainbow Wahine took a 11-0 lead on Rodriguez's leadoff homer, Katie Grimes' 2-run single to left, and Majam's RBI double to right-center field.
Kaia Parnaby (18-5) took a no-hitter into fourth before Nevada got consecutive singles with two outs. She gave up a two-run homer to Britton Murdock in the fifth to make it 11-2. Parnaby allowed five hits, struck out five and walked three.
