Hawaii County police are holding a man in connection with a Saturday night stabbing that left two people injured.

Emmanuel Niihau Jr. of Kailua, Kona, who also is known as Bob Niihau, is being held at the Kona cellblock while an investigation continues.

Police responded to a 7:41 p.m. call reporting a stabbing at Kahaluu Beach Park.

Police say a 41-year-old woman and 51-year-old man were with friends in a pavilion when an argument broke out. The woman was stabbed in the back, and when the man went to the woman's aid, he was stabbed in the right side.

Niihau, 58, was arrested in an abandoned stone church across the park less than an hour after the incident.

Both victims were taken to Kona Community Hospital. The man was treated and released; the woman remains in the hospital in guarded condition.
