Farrington girls rally past Roosevelt, 46-42

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

With her team down 11 points at halftime, Farrington junior Kirsten-Marie Liana knew it was time to get to work.

Liana scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the second half to lead the Governors to a 46-42 win over Roosevelt last night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division Tournament.

Farrington (14-1) scored the final seven points of the game to remain unbeaten in the double-elimination tourney while seeking its second straight Red title. It was the first tournament loss for the Rough Riders (13-2), who play Moanalua Tuesday for the right to oppose Farrington in Thursday's championship final.

"Any win is a thrill, but Roosevelt is a tough team and to come back from behind, play a good game and get the win against a good team, it's definitely a thrill," Governors coach Caroline Tatupu said.

Nicole Ramirez gave Roosevelt a 42-39 lead with 1:21 to play after she made two free throws, but Farrington tied it on its next possession on a 3-pointer by Ashley Gravely.

The Rough Riders turned it over on a traveling call and Farrington's Dianna Prescott was fouled and made the back end of two free throws. Roosevelt was then whistled for a backcourt violation and Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo was sent to the line after drawing a foul with 16 seconds left. She hit her first free throw to make it 44-42, but missed the second. The rebound came off to a Roosevelt player, but the ensuing outlet pass was intercepted by Farrington and Gravely sealed it with an easy layup.

"Defense will win any ballgame, and at the end, it usually comes down to who plays the better defense," Tatupu said. "Both teams played well defensively, so we're just glad to come out with the win."

Farrington, the OIA East's top seed, struggled early on, committing eight first-half turnovers. The Rough Riders controlled the tempo with their methodical, halfcourt offense.

"Roosevelt likes to cut to the basket and they have such good shooters on the perimeter as well, so if you stay with your man and cut in and the ball gets kicked out, then they have an open shot," Tatupu said. "Our thing is we try to run whenever we can if we can push the ball upcourt to our advantage."

Despite facing a 24-13 deficit at the intermission, Liana said there wasn't any panic in the locker room.

"We always have a slow start, but during halftime our coaches talk to us and we always come through in the second half," said Liana, a 5-foot-11 forward. "Roosevelt is a good team, but we just had to play our game, block out the crowd and everything else and play together."

In the final quarter, Farrington cut the Roosevelt lead to 40-39 at the 1:41 mark after Liana hit a banker. After Ramirez made her free throws, the Govs closed it out on a 7-0 run.

"It was a tough game, but we all did our job and played as a team and we came through," Liana said.

Ramirez led Roosevelt with 16 points and Mikela Thoemmes added 13.
