Firefighters rescue disoriented Japanese student off trail

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters assisted a Japanese exchange student off the Waimano Trail tonight after she became disoriented while on the trail, firefighters said.

The woman, in her 20s, was unable to call 9-1-1 because of her limited English skills,, so she called a friend who called 9-1-1, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.
The call came in about 7:30 p.m. and two HFD units hiked on the trail along different trails. Firefighters made voice contact with the young woman at 8:05 p.m. and located her five minutes later, Kealoha said.
The student was uninjured and in good spirits, Kealoha said. She was escorted off the trail by firefighters at 8:45 p.m.
