'Iolani girls top MPI; earn No. 1 seed in ILH

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

With two of its top guards out of action with knee injuries, 'Iolani still managed to hold off visiting Mid-Pacific, 51-42, last night to lock up second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls regular-season finale.

The Raiders, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, finished 9-3 in the regular season and earned the No. 1 seed in next week's ILH's postseason tournament to determine the league's second state tournament berth. They will host No. 4 seed Maryknoll (0-12) on Wednesday.

MPI, ranked No. 7 by The Advertiser, finished third at 7-5 and will face No. 3 seed Kamehameha (3-9).

Punahou (11-1) clinched the ILH championship and automatic state tournament berth last week, and will not play in the league tourney.

'Iolani may have appeared vulnerable entering last night's game, with guards Kylie Maeda and Lahela Usui both in street clothes and wearing knee braces.

But freshman post Alex Masaquel helped pick up the slack with a game-high 15 points, including 11 in the pivotal second half.

"The pressure is on, but I think we can work it out as a team," said Masaquel, a 5-foot-10 forward. "Our team just connects well, we have good chemistry."

The Owls led 23-22 at halftime and 30-26 with 1:35 remaining in the third period, but Masaquel converted a three-point play 21 seconds later and Lori Yamashita completed a 7-0 run with two free throws with three seconds left in the quarter.

Masaquel then opened the fourth period with a putback and two free throws to make it 39-30, and Mid-Pacific could not get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Masaquel and fellow post Taimane Passi also helped limit Owls center Jenna Savusa to four free throws over the final three quarters after she scored nine points in the first.

"Their posts are starting to step up," Owls coach Wes Masuda said. "They played real well."

Yamashita added 12 points for the Raiders. 'Iolani coach Eddie Maruyama said Usui (sprained knee) is expected to be back in action next week.
