Man dies in 3-car crash on Kauai

The Garden Island

LAWAI — A Kalaheo man died yesterday after his car was struck head-on by a Kauai Coffee delivery van that crossed the center line on Kaumualii Highway in Lawai, Kauai police said.

Glenn Doi, 59, was traveling toward Lihue about 9:20 a.m. when he collided with the westbound van operated by 61-year-old William Corbett of Lihue. The crash happened west of the Lawai Post Office near Mile Marker 10.
Doi’s car was then rear-ended by a car operated by Ashlie Moriguchi, police said in a press release issued yesterday afternoon.
Moriguchi and Corbett were treated and released from Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where Doi was pronounced dead.
Doi is Kauai’s third traffic fatality of 2010. All three fatal accidents have occurred on the South Shore — one near Maluhia Road outside Koloa and another near the entrance to Kahili Mountain Park.
“Our entire organization has been saddened by today’s collision, which involved a company vehicle and driver. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who lost a loved one today,” Kauai Coffee Company President and General Manager Wayne Katayama said in an e-mailed statement of condolence.
“We have been and will continue to cooperate fully with county authorities who respond to and investigate these matters.”
Police closed both lanes of Kaumualii Highway for approximately four hours as they investigated the crash. Westbound traffic was redirected to Akemama Road and eastbound traffic to Koloa Road.
