Advertiser Staff

Kona Historical Society is organizing two excursions to better familiarize Islanders and visitors with the Kona coast one by boat and one by jeep.

The historical cruise, 4 to 7 p.m. April 3, sets sail to Kealakekua Bay with a historical interpreter and a marine naturalist on board to discuss the history of the coastline and the waters frequented by Kamehameha and other Hawaiian royalty. Cost is $45 members, $40 non-members and includes pupu and non-alcoholic beverages. A no-host bar will be available. Reservations: 800-551-8911.
The jeep trip to historical sites in Kohala is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 10, starting at Pu'ukohola National Historical Park and traveling within sight of Pololu Valley. Fred Cachola, born and raised in Kohala, will be the trip's historian, focusing on Kamehameha's time in the area.
Cost is $65 until April 5; $75 thereafter, but this trip is available only to Kona Historical Society members. Participants must sign a liability waiver. Space is limited. Reservations: 808-323-3222, or email khs@konahistorial.org. (To see the waiver and reserve a spot online, you can also go to www.konahistorial.org.)
