Advertiser Staff

A New Year's Day brush fire near the Makapuu Lighthouse was likely fireworks-related, officials said.

The blaze, which started about 11:22 a.m. and was extinguished at 2:10 p.m., burned about five acres.
Police closed Kalanianaole Highway at Kealahou Street shortly while the brush was underway.
The fire did not threaten any homes.
In all, about 30 firefighters were on scene along with two helicopters dropping water.
The fire was first reported on the mauka side of the Kalanianaole Highway near the Hawaii Kai Golf Course.
