Snorkeler apparently drowns off Kaaawa

Advertiser Staff

A snorkeler in his 40s apparently drowned off Kaaawa on New Year's Day.

The Honolulu Fire Department got a report of a missing snorkeler about 4:47 p.m., and firefighters and lifeguards searched for him in the air and in the water.
About 5:44 p.m., a HFD helicopter spotted the man about 100 yards offshore.
He was brought to shore by lifeguards, and was pronounced dead about 5:49 p.m.
An HFD spokesman said the man was snorkeling alone.
