HFD rescues injured hiker from island in Kailua Bay

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department rescued an Oahu man Saturday afternoon from Moku Nui, the larger of the two Mokulua Islands in Kailua Bay.

The man, who was in his 40s, hurt his ankle while hiking on the back side of the island and was unable to walk.

HFD launched a rescue water craft and, working with Ocean Safety personnel, was able to find and treat the man while awaiting the HFD helicopter.

HFD’s Air 1 landed rescue specialists and used a net to take the injured man to a landing zone at Kailua Beach Park where EMS paramedics took over.

The call came in at 3:16 p.m., said HFD Capt. Terry Seelig. Rescue specialists were on the scene by 3:50 and the man was flown from the island and handed over to paramedics by 4 p.m.
