2 men injured in collision on Maui

Maui News

KUAU — Two drivers were critically injured in a head-on collision Monday afternoon on Hana Highway, closing a curving stretch of the road fronting the entrance to Mama's Fish House while police investigated.

The crash was reported at 12:38 p.m. when a white 2004 Nissan Altima sedan traveling in the Haiku direction was turning left into the driveway of Mama’s Fish House and collided with a Kahului-bound silver 2001 Volkswagen, police said.
The Nissan, its airbags deployed, came to rest sideways straddling the centerline, while the Volkswagen rolled backward after the impact to end up in the driveway to the restaurant parking lot.
Both the Nissan driver, a 30-year-old Haiku man, and the 43-year-old Huelo man driving the Volkswagen suffered critical injuries that were initially considered life-threatening, police said. Both were taken by ambulance and admitted to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where their injuries later were upgraded to nonlife-threatening, police said.
Police said neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
