Boxing: Uchiyama, Poonsawat win WBA title bouts

Associated Press

TOKYO Takashi Uchiyama knocked out Juan Carlos Salgado on Monday night to win the WBA super featherweight title, while Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym defended his bantamweight belt with a majority decision over Satoshi Hosana.

Uchiyama (14-0, 11 KOs) sent his Mexican challenger to the mat with a combination to the head late in the final round. Salgado (21-1-1) returned to his feet briefly before the referee stopped the bout with 10 seconds left.

In the co-main event, the 29-year-old Poonsawat (40-1) built up a solid lead in the middle rounds against Hosono (16-1). The Thai fighter then held on in the first defense of the title he won by defeating Bernard Dunne last September.

Two judges scored the bout 117-113 and 115-113, while the third scored it a draw.
