Kamehameha boys hold off 'Iolani, 49-47

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Micah Christenson scored 22 points including a baseline jumper with 1:04 remaining and then grabbed the game-sealing defensive rebound as time expired last night to help visiting Kamehameha hold off 'Iolani, 49-47, in a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball showdown.

The defending state champion Warriors improved to 2-1 in ILH play; 'Iolani fell to 2-1.

The Raiders defeated Kamehameha two weeks ago to win the Moanalua Nā Menehune Classic title, but Christenson a 6-foot-5 forward who made The Advertiser's All-State first team as a sophomore last season was away on a Mainland volleyball trip.

Last night, Christenson also had 11 rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist. The Warriors needed all of that, as 'Iolani's Andrew Skalman went to the free throw line for three attempts and a chance to tie it with 0.8 seconds left.

Skalman missed the first attempt, made the second and missed the third on purpose as 'Iolani hoped to get a tip-in putback.

But Christenson grabbed the rebound and secured it as the horn sounded.

"We haven't won at 'Iolani in a long time," Christenson said. "I felt the team was fired up for this game, and the coaches prepared us well."

After a tight first half, Kamehameha took the lead for good at 29-27 on Christenson's 3-pointer with 5:50 left in the third period. The Warriors stretched it to 42-33 entering the fourth quarter, but the Raiders clawed back and closed to 47-46 on Kainoa Chu's three-point play with 1:25 remaining.

Christenson answered with his 12-foot jumper, and two 3-point attempts by 'Iolani rimmed out. The Raiders got the ball back on a steal with 16 seconds left and worked the ball to Skalman, who launched a 3-pointer from the left corner.

The shot missed, but he was fouled on the play.

"I'm proud of how our guys came back," 'Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said.

Chu finished with a game-high 25 points. Charlton Tang added 14 points for Kamehameha.
