African-American fraternity hosts scholarship fundraiser

Advertiser Staff

An African-American fraternity in Honolulu will host a fundraiser 10 p.m.-2 a.m. on Jan. 30 at Don Ho’s Island Grill. Money raised will support the scholarship fund of the Lambda Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

Omega Psi Phi is an international fraternity and is the first African-American national fraternal organization to be founded at a historically black college.

Lambda Beta Beta, which serves Hawaii and is based in Schofield Barracks, is active in the community by providing college scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Honolulu since 1982. In 2008 and 2009, Lambda Beta Beta provided more than $8,000 dollars in scholarships to college freshmen.

The chapter has also participated in blood drives, talent hunts, reading programs and mentoring for Hawaii’s youth in elementary, middle and high schools.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. To purchase tickets or to apply for a scholarship, contact Walter Daniel at 392-6405.
