Tennis: Girl, 10, allegedly indecently assaulted at Australian Open

Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia — Victoria state police are investigating the alleged indecent assault of a 10-year-old girl at the Australian Open tennis venue.

A statement from Victoria Police said the girl was standing amid a large crowd near the entrance of Court 4 on Saturday afternoon when she was approached from behind by man, who allegedly indecently assaulted her and ran away.

The girl was able to describe her attacker to police and investigators are screening security camera footage to try to identify him, the statement said.

Police declined to elaborate on the statement.

Detective Acting Inspector Mark Zervaas told the Herald Sun newspaper that the girl was briefly separated from her family while waiting to watch Andy Murray, who had been warming up.

"It's a disgusting act and the girl and her family are being counseled," he said.

Security officers regularly patrol all areas of Melbourne Park, where a record 49,395 people attended Saturday's matches.
