Kalihi lifter in senior nationals
Kyle Yamauchi, 26, a Punahou alum from Kalihi, won the 62 kg (136 pounds) division of the American Open Weightlifting Championships held in Mobile, Ala., in December.
An Olympic weightlifter for about 10 years and a four-time junior national winner, Yamauchi converted lifts in the snatch of 110 kg (242 pounds) and in the clean & jerk of 138 kg (304 pounds) for a total of 248 kg (546 pounds).
In June in Peoria, Ill., Yamauchi will compete in the Senior Nationals, considered the most prestigious national title for Olympic weightlifting. Yamauchi attended training camps in China in 2007 and 2008. He also trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2008.
