Hawaii finishes second to Australia in World Junior Surfing Championship
Hawai‘i finished in second place in the team standings at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship today in New Zealand.
The final day of the eight-day contest was completed today in 3-foot waves at Piha Beach, Auckland, New Zealand.
Australia took the team title for the fifth consecutive year. For the second consecutive year, Hawai‘i had the team lead entering the final day but finished runner-up.
Alessa Quizon of Wai‘anae was Hawai‘i's top individual surfer. She placed second in the Girls 18 division.
Quizon had the lead in the closing minutes of the Girls 18 final, but Australia's Tyler Wright won it with a final wave at the buzzer.
Kaua‘i's Koa Smith was the only other Hawaiçi surfer to reach a final. He placed third in the Boys 16 division.
The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 18 and younger. More than 200 surfers representing 21 countries/regions participated.
