No. 5 'Iolani rallies past No. 6 Mid-Pacific

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Overcoming an 18-point, third-period deficit, 'Iolani rallied past visiting Mid-Pacific, 55-52, last night in a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball matchup.

The Raiders, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 6-2 in the ILH; the No. 6-ranked Owls fell to 5-3, with No. 3 Punahou (8-1) looming Friday.

MPI led 37-19 after Paige Young's free throw with 5:49 remaining in the third period, but Alyssa Li'ili'i's turnaround bank shot in the lane started 'Iolani on a 12-0 run capped by Lori Yamashita's steal and layup that closed it to 37-31 with 1:16 left in the quarter.

The Owls stretched the lead to 46-37 after Ashley Yamachika's two free throws a minute into the final period, but sophomore Saphyre Rezentes' three-point play started the Raiders on a 9-2 run that tied it at 46-46 after Alex Masaquel's short jumper with 4:16 remaining.

'Iolani took the lead for good on Yamashita's 3-pointer that made it 49-48 with 2:42 left, and the Raiders stretched the lead to 53-49 with 19 seconds remaining after two free throws by Kylie Maeda who entered the game just moments before after missing the past six weeks with a knee injury.

Kelli Shibata sank a 3-pointer her fourth of the game to close it to 53-52 with 10.3 ticks left, but Yamashita answered with two free throws three seconds later and Shibata's 25-foot attempt at the buzzer glanced off the front of the rim.

"I really appreciate my teammates the team never gave up despite the adversity," said Yamashita, a senior guard who finished with a game-high 18 points. "This (victory) helps us, because we know we can do it, we know we can make plays when it counts."

Mid-Pacific led, 30-17, at halftime after sinking 5 of 8 shots from beyond the arc.

Lahela Usui added 12 points for 'Iolani.
