Oahu lifeguards urge caution as big waves, surf contest hit North Shore

Advertiser Staff

City lifeguards are urging beachgoers to practice extreme caution today at beaches on Oahu’s north- and west-facing shores.

A high-surf warning remains in effect until 6 tonight, with the National Weather Service forecasting waves in the 15- to 20-foot range.
Bryan Cheplic of the city’s Emergency Services Department said North Shore lifeguards are reporting waves with face values of 12 to 15 feet with occasional 18-foot sets.
Beachgoers are urged to consult with lifeguards before going into the water and to heed any warning signs that might be posted.
Meanwhile, organizers of the Volcom Pipeline Pro surf meet said the event is on today at Ehukai Beach Park.
Lifeguards are advising drivers to be aware of increased foot traffic in the area.
